NEA Higher Ed on Capitol Hill

The PROSPER Act, introduced to Congress in late November, aims to replace the federal Higher Education Act (HEA). NEA opposes much of what's in the act, including the elimination of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, limits on federal borrowing for families, and the revocation of regulations for for-profit colleges. Learn more.

The GOP tax bill, which has passed the House and Senate, would make it even more difficult for middle-class Americans to afford a higher education, and would make it especially costly for graduate students. Tell Congress to fix the bill before it becomes law.

On the Hill: Take Action

The Trump/DeVos budget proposal would eliminate Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF), a 10-year-old program that promises to erase the remaining student debt of educators, firefighters, and other public-service workers who have faithfully paid on their loans for 10 years. (Read more about the program and the threat against it, here.) NEA members strongly believe PSLF must be protected. To that end, NEA has:

  1. We told Congress to keep it safe! PDF, (192 KB, 2 pgs.)
  2. We helped set up a PSFL Caucus on Congress that will work to protect the program.
  3. We continue to urge our members to tell their Senators and Representatives to reject the Trump/DeVos plan to eliminate PSLF.

The Trump/DeVos budget proposal also would cut billions of dollars from higher education and college affordability programs, putting higher education even further out of reach for too many Americans. Take a stand against it.

The College For All Act, introduced by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), would make community college free and eliminate tuition at public four-year colleges and universities for most American families. Ask Congress to support it!

NEA strongly opposes the Trump/DeVos proposal to eliminate Public Service Loan Forgiveness, a federal program that promises debt relief to teachers, law enforcement officers, health workers, and more.

NEA, AFT & AAUP issue joint recommendations for Higher Ed Act

The three unions, NEA, AFT and AAUP, representing more than 350,000 higher-education faculty and staff, have issued recommendations to Congress around the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act. Those recommendations include measures to make college more affordable, and also to stop and reverse the trend toward contingent academic labor. Check them out

Also, sign NEA's petition to Congress, asking them to protect the public good that is public higher education.
