Magnified Reading

Found In: handling disruptions, noise control, sustained silent reading

I have students at various reading levels in a self-contained middle school special education class. My students are easily distracted and have problems focusing on their reading. When they read, several of them have to say the words out loud in order to understand what they have read. I have solved the problem caused by these students distracting the others by giving them an “elbow joint” of a PVC pipe (available at any hardware store for under $2.00). When they speak softly into one end of the pipe and hold the other up to their ear, the sound is magnified. They can hear what they are reading, but no one else can!
