Music Hearts

Found In: Music, Songs & Poems

I’ve found many varied uses for brightly colored foam hearts cut from sheet foam, which is cheap and widely available. Using our school die cut, I cut out the hearts and put magnetic strips on the back of them. I then use them to show patterns, starting always with green at the left and red at the end. I can show groupings of two, three, four, or more to demonstrate time signatures, and then have the students label each with the correct meter. I also use them across the top of my board to show the number of beats in a measure while lining up quarter notes, half notes, eighth notes, etc., on index cards underneath. This process shows them that the beats in a measure stay constant while the division of the beats changes. We create varied rhythm patterns in this grid, and then play or clap them.
