Time Savers

Found in: reduce, reuse, recycle; routines & procedures; time management

  • My students pick up handouts from a small table on their way into class, which has eliminated the need to pass out papers.
  • I recycle notebook paper (students are usually willing to donate the 'good' paper left in their notebooks at the end of the year) into 'quiz strips' by cutting it into identically sized pieces - easy to handle, grade, and store.
  • I color-code my five classes and use the appropriate color marker to grade each period's papers; when it's time to put grades into the computer, I can tell at a glance that I've got the right batch.
  • I start every class period by setting a timer for 10 minutes of silent reading. I spend a minute taking attendance, and then I get to read too! (You could also use the time to quietly set up equipment or materials.)
