Movement Break Momentum

Found In: discipline, kinesthetic learning, routines & procedures

Years ago in a workshop I attended, I learned a great strategy that’s helped me circumvent a good deal of misbehavior in my classroom: for every “movement break” you give students, you buy back 15-20 more minutes of their attention. This is as simple as having everyone get up to get a textbook, turn in a paper, stand up and sit down in response to question, etc. Start by teaching them the traffic pattern you want in your room. Make sure everyone that can, does the full walk around the room in 1 direction, past the bubbler/pencil sharpener, etc. Trust me. This works!
